FROM 1 JULY 2026, NEWLY REGISTERED GOODS VEHICLES OVER 2.5 TONNES USED ON INTERNATIONAL JOURNEYS FOR HIRE AND REWARD MUST BE FITTED WITH A FULL SMART 2 TACHOGRAPH.
Vehicles between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes that are used only in the UK do not need a tachograph under this specific rule. That means some van operators may need to act soon, especially if they carry goods internationally for payment.
WHAT THIS MEANS
From 1 July 2026, some vans and light commercial vehicles over 2.5 tonnes will need a tachograph. That means more checks, more records and more admin. If your vehicle is affected, there are rules about how often tachograph data must be downloaded.
- Driver cards must be downloaded at least every 28 days
- Vehicle tachograph data must be downloaded at least every 90 days
